This meeting aims to encourage forward-thinking clinicians to consider medical apps when deciding on an appropriate intervention and aims to reduce the fear, uncertainty and doubt about the use of medical apps.

This event is the fifth annual medical apps event run by the Section; the previous four have all been popular. The purpose of each one has been to educate forward-thinking clinicians in the benefits of using medical apps to improve patient outcomes and reduce costs. In view of the expectation that the NHS will have an mHealth assessment operation running by next April, this event will focus on mainstreaming the use of apps within the health and care services.

The agenda features heavyweight speakers that will cover all aspects of mainstreaming medical apps. In particular we will have Alexia Tonnel a Director of NICE, and her opposite number from the MHRA to talk about endorsement and regulation, supported by eminent lawyer Julian Hitchcock and senior academic Professor Jeremy Wyatt.

Bethany Gildersleeve, Operations Manager for NHS Digital, will describe how  the app assessment activity works and what to expect in future. Dr Richard Brady will give another of his excellent, amusingly presented talks on bad apps. Felix Naughton will cover the ways apps can be used to change behaviour, and Ian Gallifant explain how to build an app ecosystem on an EHR. To round the event off we have two exemplars of app developers to describe their craft including a medically-cleared diagnostic app for professionals.

Objectives:

• To explain the latest position on regulation and endorsement of medical apps.
• To describe how behaviour change is best effected using mobile apps.
• To give examples of best practice with interventions involving medical apps.
